Artificial Structures · The learning field guide

Learn the
structure.
Question the
answer.

Data structures, Python, algorithms, and the craft of thinking with AI.

A field guide for students who want to understand not only what code does, but why it works—and how to challenge the answers an AI produces.

01 / The philosophy

First, understand the specimen.

Artificial Structures approaches data structures as something to encounter, inspect, trace, and explain. An AI assistant may be part of the expedition, but understanding must remain with the learner.

The course is growing in public through Field Notes and Expedition Notes. Its fuller connected-module redesign can come later; here, the working classroom takes priority.

SPECIMEN 06 · A TREE
class Node:
    def __init__(self, data):
        self.data = data
        self.left = None
        self.right = None

# The question is not merely:
# "Does it run?"
# Ask: "What happens in memory?"
FIELD NOTES / OBSERVE → TRACE → EXPLAIN

02 / How we learn

Four steps through
every specimen.

01 / ENCOUNTER

Notice

Meet the problem and identify the structure underneath it.

02 / FIELD NOTES

Understand

Trace the data, the memory, the algorithm, and its complexity.

03 / ASK ARDEN

Challenge

Use AI to ask better questions—not to surrender the thinking.

04 / EXPEDITION LOG

Demonstrate

Show what changed, what failed, and what you can now explain.
